Kite Surfing

Sun Wind Beach Kite Camp, founded in 2015 by Susantha Fernando—Kalpitiya’s first local kitesurfer and a skilled boatsman from a humble fishing family with deep roots in the area—has recently formed a partnership with the Kalpitiya Diving Center. Susantha, who discovered kitesurfing in 2007 during a time when Kalpitiya was a quiet rural backwater amid Sri Lanka’s civil war, taught himself the sport after being gifted a kite by foreign visitors, later refining his skills through training and earning IKO certification. Driven by his passion for kitesurfing, meeting new people, and showcasing Kalpitiya, Susantha created Sun Wind Beach as a warm and welcoming place for people from all walks of life to gather, relax, and enjoy. Now, through this new partnership with the kalpitiya diving center, visitors can experience an even broader range of water sports and activities. Susantha is happily married and looks forward to teaching his young son, Senula, the joys of kitesurfing.
